Saturday Project: Type Faster without actually learning how to type faster

We all know how to use shortcuts such as CTRL + S to save a document in many applications, but have you ever explored all the other options available in those office suites?

Just minimize the amount of letters you type!

Let me explain.

Since we already type in a pseudo-shorthand on the internet (lol for laughing out loud, or wtf for what the …hell), this can be very easy to learn, as it’s just a couple of letters to type, and it is YOUR shorthand lingo.

For example:

  • b/ = between
  • irl = in real life
  • e(x) = expect
  • e(x)g = expecting

A shortcut to typing faster without learning how to really type faster, is to use shorthand, and AutoCorrect.

Any time you type in shorthand, AutoCorrect will recognize it as another word, and immediately substitute in the full word.

Sort of like an automatic “Find & Replace” function.

How to find AutoCorrect in Microsoft Office Suite

Depending on what version you use, this can be a real PITA (Pain in the Ass).

In Microsoft Word 2007 here are the clicks:

  1. Right-click on one of the tabs at the top like “Review”
  2. Select: Customize Quick Access Toolbar
  3. Click on: Proofing
  4. Click on the button: Autocorrect Options

In older versions of Microsoft Word, I believe it is located somewhat like this:

  1. Select:  Edit at the top
  2. Click on: Options
  3. Click on: AutoCorrect

You can add in your entire library of shorthand now, and when you type b/, it will always autocorrect to between.

As you can see in this example below, I put “b/” to always autocorrect as “between”

Autocorrect

Funny story:

Once, I was typing all in shorthand using AutoCorrect, and my friend sitting behind me was gawking at my screen because I’d be typing in a 3 letter word and it would immediately turn into a 9 or 10 letter word almost like magic.

He thought I was like some sort of crazy whiz on a keyboard, he had never seen anyone type so fast. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I was using AutoCorrect and spoil the illusion.

Another use of autocorrect is driving a victim insane! As a kid we played a prank on a rather ill-tempered boss by setting her autocorrect to deliberately misspell words (and replace a few choice words entirely). She was a bit nicer to us after that!

What a brilliant idea! I never would have thought of that. Totally just added cxn —> connection and rxn –> reaction in my AutoCorrect dictionary.
