As requested by reader, Eric, he’d like to know how to look like a rockstar on the barest of bare, minimalist wardrobes.
MEN VS. WOMEN’S FASHION
This is going to be new blogging ground for me, because I am not into men’s fashion & clothing, but I do know what I like to see on guys.
See, as a woman, it’s very simple and can also be very complex for us.
We can make it as difficult as we want — just look around at the percentage of women’s retailers versus men’s.
…and we can make it as easy as we want — to give variety & stay simple, we just change our hairstyle, purses, shoes and/or jewellery, and it’s a new outfit.
For men, it’s a little more limited, in the sense that men don’t generally steer towards wearing skirts or dresses, and what they do end up wearing is pretty standard, normal stuff — just in different colours.
I tried asking BF for some help, but then I realized that he is probably too laissez-faire and minimalist for me to write a proper wardrobe post based on what he wears.
He really doesn’t care what he wears, as long as he’s comfortable, presentable, clean & clothed.
Therefore, I am going to do this from only my perspective.
So let’s start with the basics:
What to avoid/purge from your wardrobe & life
These are not just clothing related, but general appearance tips.
My apologies to anyone who does any, some or all of the following, but it DOES look ridiculous.
And please do not be fooled by the pictures of women fawning over these guys.
They’re probably paid to be there & to entertain the guys at these events.
Unpaid, attractive women on the street, will not be as impressed, and may even secretly laugh behind your back with their girlfriends.
1. OVERLY TRENDY, CULT CLOTHING
Frankly, I have no idea why this Ed Hardy brand is so popular. It is kind of trashy for average Joes, and even average Janes who wear those Ed Hardy trucker hats (seriously?)
Also, I do believe the brand “Affliction” can also be put on this list of stupid clothing:
In fact, let’s put on that list anything that is overly cheesy or “trendy, including Asian-print button up shirts, anything in neon prints or colours & with tribal motifs.
You know the ones I’m talking about.
2. OVER TANNING (FAUX OR REAL) MAKES YOU AN UGLY CARROT
It’s true. Just look at how silly these guys look.
(Besides, real tanning is bad for your skin — it’s the #1 cause of wrinkles, and ageing.)
3. AVOID MAKING ANY KIND OF DUCK FACE AT ALL TIMES (MEN & WOMEN!)
I don’t even know how this became an acceptable face to have in a picture.
It’s like they would love to have Botoxed the hell out of their lips, but just never got around to doing it.
I do hope this couple was just being funny…. but somehow, I doubt it.
4. DO NOT USE TOO MUCH PRODUCT IN YOUR HAIR
Nobody likes a crunchy head.
Think about it, would you want to run your hands through a gelled cactus? Didn’t think so.
5. AVOID BAGGY, SAGGY PANTS
I have never understood this look — how can you walk properly in them?
If you want to wear your boxers out in public, why don’t you just do that?
I always have this wicked urge to pull down their pants when I see this “look”.
In short, stick to what other regular, well-dressed guys are wearing, and avoid looking too trendy.
Look neat, presentable and you are already halfway there.
Take inspiration from around you, and if you like an outfit on someone, make note of what he’s wearing so you can shop your own wardrobe to do it.
Yes, that sounds horribly girly, but hey, this is a primer!
So what comprises a basic men’s wardrobe, you ask?
