Wow, last Friday, i attended an incedibly interesting information conference regarding all of the different things that parents-to-be would likely be shopping for in anticipation of the arrival of their baby.
Talk about a new type of Friday night date:) It was given by a store that sells all of this so I was expecting a heavy sales pitch. It turned put to be very interesting, trying to figure out which stroller or car seat to get can be a daunting task but while we did not buy anything right after, several of the displayed items did turn out to be our choices. Here is the stroller we finally got, the City Mini GT…. Almost sounds like a new type of car right?
My challenge in all of this is trying to decide what is truly a good purchase from what is clearly not necessary. Like the wedding industry, the baby equipment industry has been able to expand by several times the number of things required to become a proper parent.
Even going back to my stroller example. Do i really need to have these 20 accessories to go with it, in order to protect me from wind, rain, insects, sun, etc. 20 years ago, a stroller was just a stroller. Technology has made many aspects of strollers better but how much of it is reallynecessary or even useful?
Feeding Bottle
Think about feeding bottles, an item that used to be sold for a few dollars. These days, you can get about 50 different accessories which all seem useful (to an extent for several) but in my quest to avoid accumulating hundreds of items, i find it very challenging to decide what i should be getting and what I can and should live without.
