Using Packing Cubes to Stay Organized

When I pack my suitcases, I am always annoyed when I want to wear a specific blouse (don’t judge) and I have to root through mounds of perfectly rolled, neatly packed clothing just to find it.

All of my neatly rolled pieces get unrolled, and sometimes it even gets mixed up. ARG!!

Enter: Packing Cubes!!!

I bought just enough to cover most of my items except the following:

  • No Jackets (Winter or otherwise)
  • No Bulky Sweaters
  • No Suits or Jackets — They go in a suit bag
  • Bras. I can’t squish them in there and ruin them! I’ll need to find another option for them.

I don’t plan on rolling or packing those, they need to stay flat, or don’t really require organization.

I haven’t filled each of them up yet, but I’ve pretty much catalogued what I own in clothing on my iPod Touch as organized clothing categories, and I calculated how many Packing Cubes I’d need for each “section” based on size.

I bought 6 Large, 5 Medium, 2 Small to cover my entire wardrobe.

Whatever doesn’t fit, will have to be “downsized”, if you get my drift. ;)

These are the 6 Large Packing Cubes from Eagle Creek:

  • 2 Sweaters — Even tightly rolled, they are bulky
  • 1 Pants — Not many pants either
  • 1 Skirts — I don’t have too many
  • 2 Dresses — I have a whole bunch of dresses.

And here are 5 medium bags and 2 small ones:

5 Medium Bags:

  • 4 Medium Bags for Tops, Tanks and Blouses
  • 1 for Scarves and Winter Stuff (it’s expandable!)

2 Small Bags that are double-sided:

  • 1 Underwear / Handkerchiefs on the other side
  • 1 Socks / Tights on the other side

You’d be surprised how much these little bags can hold. I can pack these to the brim and they will STILL ZIP UP! I love how compact it is, and the mesh is handy to see what I have in there at a glance.

ARE YOU GOING TO USE PACKING CUBES TO TRAVEL?

I am not convinced I’ll use more than one for actual traveling to different cities or countries for a short vacation, but it will sure be handy to keep my clothing organized and packed until we settle into our next place.

Each time we move, I’ll be able to move with most of my things, and if I need a pair of socks, I know exactly what bag to go to without disturbing the rest.

I like how neatly they all pack onto each other, and have little handles as well.

I’m thrilled to bits and I wish I had found them sooner!

IS THERE A CHEAPER OPTION?

Of course. There’s always a cheaper option, but they aren’t quite what I want. :)

I could have always purchased cheap pouches from Dollarama but they don’t offer the same lightweight fabric, with a mesh, a handle and expandable sections as required.

It is exactly what I want.

That said, my good friend The Asian Pear suggested on Twitter, using mesh bags from the dollar store, but they just don’t have the same shape and structure that these packing cubes offer.

They kind of go all over the place, and I feel like my tightly rolled pieces would fall apart and become messy with time.

There is another option for those vacuum sealable bags, but they crinkle your clothes up like mad and I’d have to iron everything. Ick.
