Television Stats are through the roof for the U.S.

Could it also be a factor in contributing to how we never seem to have enough time to do anything such as declutter?

Maybe we ought to think about cutting back on watching television so we can snatch that time back for real life errands & tedious little To Do tasks.

TV consumption is off the charts!

Good lord! Who even has eight hours in the day?! And I watch about three hours a week … does that mean that some poor soul out there is taking on my extra 53 hours a week?!

Some people are definitely killing their lives in front of the TV, to be sure. But then again, there’s stuff like Heroes or Lost – thoughtful, well-written shows where some episodes might actually have to be seen over to get the full import. The Daily Show, News Hour with Jim Lehrer, The Office (not my cup of tea – I was more into Arrested Development) – these are solid contributions to TV as a genre, and not always just a time waster. The Office has more to say about the soullessness of modern business practice than a lot of people who are taken far more seriously.

I dunno. I think the real measure that we need to reprioritize is this: when people can’t appreciate the good that others do, we’re glutted and ungrateful, and that needs to change.

Pre-comment-comment: I put you in my twice-a-week blog folder because you only planned to post two or three times a week! THIS IS NOT TWO OR THREE TIMES!! :P

That is absolutely stunning, in that awful “wow you just hit my dog” kind of way. How in the hell do they do that?! I’m paring down the shows I watch because I just don’t have enough time — and before I do that, it works out to about six hours. Per week. Which is a bajillion times less than the average American, apparently!

There isn’t even anything worth watching for eight hours imho x.x Yes, there are some absolutely bloody brilliant shows out there, but by now means eight hours of them. Per day.

@Rae Sorry. :) I forgot to mention that I post ad hoc when I see interesting things!

8 hours a day is a bit much I think. I have a feeling their stats are bit skewed to make a point.

@ashok I do agree there are a lot of great shows. I happen to enjoy Dragon’s Den a lot. I find their new ideas interesting & the sharp answers the Dragons give, quite refreshing and to the point.

@TKOG Possibly. But it may also be a skewed statistic. I cannot imagine how other countries don’t watch a smidgen close to what people watch in the States.

I would have imagined Canada to be close.

This story is from the economist. It looks like 8 hours per day is for the entire household and not just an individual. That would make more sense.

    http://www.economist.com/daily/chartgallery/displaystory.cfm?story_id=14252309

“DESPITE an increase in entertainment choices, watching television remains as popular as ever, according to data from the OECD’s Communications Outlook report. American households watch the box for over eight hours a day on average, twice as long as anyone else. Viewing has fallen in some countries. Turks reportedly watched an hour’s less television per day in 2007 than they did only two years earlier, when the country was America’s nearest rival as couch-potato king.”

@Vishnu I KNEW the number sounded a bit too high. But still 8 hours per household is really bonkers. And I can’t believe Canada doesn’t watch close to as much TV :\
