For Photography Lovers, and On Living A Life After Death Through Your Photos

I have a great respect for photography, seeing as my family is quite artistic, so coming across this YouTube video about Vivian Maier, a street photographer is quite interesting.

First, there’s a biography (a story) that hooked me about this private, Frenchwoman who lived in the U.S., and second, her photos are stunning. She had a real skill and talent that even someone with my limited level of photographic experience and expertise can clearly see.

The only thing I wasn’t all too thrilled about in the video was the guy hinting that if she became famous, he’d be “sitting on a goldmine”. He didn’t come right out and say it, but I do get the distinct feeling (as the narrator did) that it isn’t all just to share beautiful photographs.

My initial reaction was: Really? :\

I know it makes sense (I’m a capitalist at heart), but somehow it feels a bit strange to hear that.

I don’t know if I’d act any differently than he would, but I almost thought it would be like a Post Secret thing instead. You know, books, non profit and tours? Perhaps I’m just too naive.

Ah well. Besides, I’m no one to judge anyone else’s actions :)

The video is 10 minutes, and worth watching just for the glimpses of some really beautiful portraits.

This bothered me at first as well, but then I found out that he spend quite a bit of money to buy the collection and spent countless hours (and money) sorting, scanning, and preserving these photographs. He has made it his mission to share her work and I feel if he wants to be able to make a living while doing this, it’s fine by me!
