HUGE BIG FAT NOT-A-MINIMALIST IN THIS DEPARTMENT DISCLAIMER:
Angela asked for a post on Minimalist Accessories, and to be totally honest: I am really the worst person to ask for this but I am giving it a shot.
I have a collection of necklaces, so I can’t just wear only one necklace forever (unless forced at gunpoint or something similarly distressing).
Some people collect books.
Some people collect phone numbers of hot girls or guys.
I collect necklaces. ;) I just find something really beautiful and compelling about them.
MINIMALIST ACCESSORIES FOR MEN
For men, it’s pretty simple and I’m using BF as an example:
- 1 Simple Watch
- 1 Black & Brown Reversible Belt
- Winter Stuff: Scarf, Gloves, Hat
- Wedding Ring [Optional - only if you're married]
BF wears a watch, but I hear a lot of you use your phones to tell the time.
He doesn’t own a cellphone, we share one and he doesn’t wear jewellery, so his punctuality depends on a watch.
Then I’d say a black and brown reversible belt ought to do the trick for all of your clothing.
Then you just need winter stuff: scarf, hat, gloves, warm woolly socks.
As for the wedding ring, well if you’re married you wear one. If not, don’t.
On to the women!
MINIMALIST ACCESSORIES FOR WOMEN
For women, I do find that if you wear a LITTLE bit of jewellery, it tends to come off as more professional.
(Don’t scream at me for this, I’ve read studies that for women, wearing makeup and a little jewellery that isn’t annoying is good for a woman’s professional image at work.)
I say that I’d consider the following to be basics, although you can choose what you want.
I find a lot of minimalist women tend to not wear very much accessory-wise.
I am admittedly (and happily) not one of them.
You can find the links to each of the items in the picture in the list below:
- Elegant watch
- 1 day purse: Something you use everyday.
- 1 clutch: For events. I find them quite handy or just to store things.
- 1 Simple belt for pants: The reversible option is always good
- 1 Fashion Belt: Obi belts around your natural waist, skinny belts
- Pashmina: Call me crazy but I use it like a blanket sometimes or at events
- Practical Winter Stuff: Scarf, Gloves, Hat
- Wedding Ring [Optional - only if you're married]
- 1 bold necklace: Something chunky and bright. My FAVOURITE
- 1 delicate necklace: Something simple, small, light and elegant
- 1 ring: Not a wedding one, but a fashion one. I like bold and modern (men’s ring shown)
- 1 Brooch: I only own one, but you can pin it on everything & use it on sweaters.
- 1 pair of long earrings: Simple, dangly for going out at night.
- 1 pair of studs/simple earrings: Nothing that jangles or distracts people at work.
You can also decide on:
- Neck scarves
- Bracelets
That’s it. That’s all a woman really needs*.
Truthfully, no one needs any accessories
Let’s be honest. It won’t end the world if you don’t wear earrings or a necklace. I do think a belt is the most practical and perhaps a purse, out of the list above.
The rest is just for.. you know, fun
As always, it depends on your taste:
Out of the above, I own the following:
- 10 Day Purses: Varying sizes, shapes, styles. No two are alike. I don’t have 2 black ones
- 3 clutches: BF bought me an elegant black one, and I have other brighter ones
- 2 watches: One elegant one, one normal bold one for in general
- 1 Simple belt for pants: I have a black/brown one
- 4 Fashion Belts: Obi belts in black, brown, magenta and a pattern
- 5 Pashminas: I use them for everything. Pink, Ivory, Blue, Patterned, Grey
- Practical Winter Stuff: Scarf, Gloves, Hat, I prefer Earmuffs
- NO wedding ring.
- 60+ Necklaces: I have them all. 60+ in total. They fit into 2 pouches.
- 10 Rings: Bold, modern, delicate, I wear them all, on EVERY finger. Just kidding.
- 1 Brooch: I only own one to pin my fastener-less sweaters shut with elegance
- 20 earrings: Like necklaces, I have them all.
What can I say?
I love accessories and they don’t take up a lot of room. I do have my favourites though.
I also giggle at a memory of one commenter who saw my jewellery collection exclaiming:
CLEOPATRA, STEP ASIDE!!! This girl has it all…
BF just might have a teeny-tiny eye-bulging moment if he saw everything out of its pouches and neatly laid out on the floor.
He might just even give me that side eye.
So, sorry Angela. I’m not a huge help in this department but I gave it a shot!
