Used is not Ugly

I recently got a new filofax and after a few days there is a dent on the front and it is really bothering me. It is tiny but I feel like I want a new one now. I’m trying to resist the urge to hate something if it has dents or scratches but I am too much of a perfectionist.

I like the idea of wabi-sabi, the look of something naturally worn and beaten up with time. Worn items to me mean love, and time. Age ages its unique touch to everything in an age of mass-produced, souless items.

I feel that way about books and handbags… Like someone else mentioned, I like carrying a handbag that’s been broken in because it just feels more comfortable!

I tried giving the used electronics thing a go once, but I had some very bad experiences… It’s hard to buy used electronics, in my opinion, because you always seem to get ripped off or you end up with something that doesn’t work after the third use. On the other side of the coin, I always sell my used electronics and take the cash to put towards an upgrade. I didn’t have to pay a penny for my new computer!

There’s nothing wrong with used electronics and technology items. Many people think they must have the absolute latest gadget and their cast-offs are usually like-new with plenty of life left in them. As with anything, you’ll want to avoid anything that is in poor condition or on the verge of being obsolete.

I love my books to always be ‘as new’, I take very good care with them – heaven forbid anyone crease the spine of a beloved tome!!  And yet I love the musty smell of older books, so whilst I love my brand new books I’ve just as much love for a tatty old one that’s falling apart which gets extra care.  Most other things I’ll love when new but enjoy that slightly used feel when I’ve had them awhile, like clothes and nothing beats comfy worn-in shoes!

I am totally like this about LEATHER!  I just sold my like new lizard Filofax and replaced it with one that is totally used and abused and beat up, but obviously well handled and well loved ostrich Filofax.  I could have owned a Filofax for twenty years and it would never look like this, and frankly, I adore it.  I also like used bags, and don’t mind used books (use library a lot, no longer buy).  I will buy used clothing/shoes/accessories, depending.  Used does not necessarily squick me out.
