Russia heads into the New Age of Western-style Consumption

A very interesting video, although I wish they would have shown more of what was at the fair.

Watch the video here on BBC news

For millionaire Russians, a Western-style existence is no longer a dream, although if you watch this video, the fair had items like diamond encrusted saucepans (really?) with 270 stones, one of four in existence, and that seems a bit over the top to me.

Or maybe I’m just not bourgeois enough.

Western-style consumption is definitely coveted by many who don’t have much (look at our huge homes that we call “tiny” and new cars we call ‘old’ after a year!), but putting diamonds on everything doesn’t mean it’s luxurious or Western-style. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a diamond-encrusted saucepan on sale here.

Besides, people who want to act and feel rich don’t cook!!! :P

They eat out and have personal chefs who make them delicious meals on a whim (oh wait, I think BF fits that bill ;) )

I just hope they don’t go the way of overspending on credit and causing another collapse.
