The Dalai Lama’s 18 Rules for Living

As we move into the new year, let’s reflect upon these wonderful teachings by the Dalai Lama.

His statements are simple but profound. I especially like the 6 ones I’ve set out in blue bold below:

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three Rs:

1. Respect for self

2. Respect for others

3. Responsibility for all your actions

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

You shouldn’t have to give anything up to achieve success.

I’ve never needed to correct my actions - I just needed to correct the distorted perception of others.

Great reminder.  I was really struck by the bolds, of course, but also, “In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.”  I’ve really tried to apply this rule with wife and kids and it has been very helpful.

I try not to bring up the past but if someone else does, the gloves are off. It’s not a good side to me, but .. admittedly, it’s true.

Nobody noticed that the Dalai Lama didn't write these? http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/dalai.asp

      *gasp* REALLY??

He didn’t write them? I had no idea. Gosh how disappointing :(

Even so, I still think they’re good rules to live by. Perhaps they were taken from his general teachings?

The Dalai Lama is a great inspiration for me, I read the Art of Happiness years ago and it changed my life.

So inspiring! I do love the Dalai Lama, even though I know it's terribly trendy to do so. Each and every one of these reminders is important. How happy we could all be if we could follow them.

I love all of these, but #18 is the most thought provoking for me.

I always do #16, it's so important. I'd prefer to go someplace I've never been before every week. Even a friend's backyard- simple stuff :)

Happy new year to you, glad you content is planned through 2011 and I'll have more minimalist inspiration to read. I'm working hard toward a more-minimalist life. I donated 6-8 boxes to the thrift store during the last week of 2010.

These are great! It is really interesting to read them and see how they make me feel as a gauge of where I am in my life. I love #1 and #16 most of all. Thanks for posting this.
