We just got back from 4 weeks and 4 countries. We used mesh bags for socks and underwear, only take one color, so if you go to do laundry it all can go in one load. 1 night gown, no more than 2 dresses,3 pairs of shoes,5 pairs of pants. I took yoga tops some pull over and some zip so if it was cold you could layer, one jacket,10 tee shirts. In my hand bag I had a pair of leggings, under wear, shirt, light slip on shoes ( I wear in the hotel rooms, do not walk around in bare feet, you don’t know) the I Pad,phone, snacks, ear plugs,3 pairs earrings, magazine, and wipes for your hands. GO AS LIGHT AS YOU CAN! IT WILL MAKE THE TRIP MUCH MORE FUN!

I use lightweight packing cubes. Allows me to pack 4 days worth of stuff for my husband, my infant daughter and myself in a hard case carry-on.

As I am disabled and only able to have one bag on the back of my wheelchair when I travel this is a grand idea thank you for the share

  • r.alyshabug

Sadly this doesn’t work if you have a hard case carry-on. I could barley put in half of what she used. Too bad cause this is pretty nifty.

  • Motormouth

I’ve heard it is cheaper to just FedEx your clothes to destination than to check the luggage…not sure if it is true though. I have not flown in many, many years. I’ve done the rolling trick for a while and I almost always fit more in. Hubby actually has me pack his because he cannot get everything in his bag. We take a lot of clothes because we go atv riding at the campground we go to and sometimes it is raining or muddy or extremely dusty! Thanks for the gallon bag tip though, going to have to try that this summer!

    So, no underwear? 10 days…..that’s a bit gross….

But she has 3 bathings suits, RME.

  • Annonymous

I stuff my underwear and socks inside my shoes – it saves space and stops them getting squashed.

  • Tinilove

I also roll my towels in the bathroom closet to save space

  • Susi

I will be traveling soon … And this will really help thanks :-)

  • Annie

Genious! Thank you so much including commentors, especially Mcrenshaw51 !

How much would that weigh? I had to completly repack because of weight restrictions on Virgin. I just had my carry-on with very little to begin with but I had to give my mum HALF of my clothes to put in her check in. It was lucky she was checking in her bag.

  • Claire

Maybe I am gross, but I would bring fewer bottoms. Unless you plan on getting very dirty, chances are you can wear the same pair of jeans multiple times without them showing signs of overwear or getting smelly. For a ten day trip, I would probably pack two pairs of jeans an either a skirt or shorts, depending on my destination.

  • genaberg

I use packing cubes. Roll up your clothes to minimize wrinkles. It will amaze you how neat and organized your clothes will be during the trip. I would not travel without them. I use eBags.

Am I the only one who noticed she doesn’t pack underwear or bras????

    • Nikki Anderson

Ooops, just saw the other comments.

I’d like to see a example of efficient packing for winter destinations. It’s so challenging to fit enough of those bulky clothes that you’re not wearing the same sweater for two weeks!

  • Gypsyqueen4424

    What? No underwear?

  • stacey

Space bags are great for traveling too.

Am I the only one who noticed that there is no underwear packed? (if someone already commented on that please ignore me, as I was too lazy to go through 300+ comments) :) )

For god’s sake, if I was blogging about the things I pack in a suitcase, I would definitely NOT add my undergarments to the list — I can only imagine what everyone would be saying if she’d told the world how many pairs of underwear and how many bras she packs with her for trips! Stop nit-picking, people.

  • sstephsnie

I’m a girl and I over pack, but three shirts, three dress pants, three casual pants/jeans, one skirt and four dresses, plus the one pair she’s wearing seems a bit excessive.

  • MileHighGear

what about food, most airlines don’t even give you food anymore. She has to spend a lot of $$$ on her trips.

So she travels with 16 shirts but no bras, panties or socks? That’s weird. I’ve rolled my clothes for years and not just packing, but also for my dresser drawers. My sister was in the Navy and taught me that trick. It works great when you’re packing up for 2 adults and 4 little boys!

    how to roll office shirt?

  • EllenBonadurer

I have a friend who shops at Goodwill before the trip… leaves the clothes at the hotel so she has room to bring back purchases.

  • Mama Rose

My aunt was a world traveler and was frequently gone for 20 – 30 days at a time. She would pack only 3 or 4 pr. of panties and several bras and launder them in the sink each night. She didn’t want to carry around a suitcase full of dirty underwear, and who has that much underwear!

  • lisa

    ummmm no undergarments?

  • Chick4256

exactly how big was her carry on

  • Brandy

also if u have any meds put those in ur purse for easy access. They need to have clear directions & ur name. i.e. birth control, heart meds, valtrex what ever u need. u can go to ur pharmacy and ask them to put the purpose of the med into the directions. (Take one pill with meal for pregnancy prevention) or whatever.

She is very clever with this ,but the amount of clothing is more for a 90 day European tour. I work for the military and travel frequently in and out of the Middle East. I can get from Afghanistan, through Kuwait and on to the US with a back pack. 7 to 10 day trips to Europe I use a carry on bag and a back pack. But I am a big girl so my clothes are bigger and take up more room. Four pants, 6 shirts and 2 colorful scarves. And keep in mind I am wearing one of those outfits. Most hotels have hair dryers, I have not packed a hair drier in years.  The best tip I have ever had when I was travelling in and out of Baghdad and onwards to a European R&R, lay out everything you want to take. Then only take half. Even then you return home having not used a few pieces.

My tip is space saving bags! Wish they were around  on all of those deployments I went on but I’ve always rolled my clothes. Trust me… it works well and saves room!

  • Elizabeth, Wondering?

Bathing suits she takes, but no underwear? Bras? Umm.

  • Artbyveda

This is a great post. I use this method and it definitely works. The only thing is that size 18 clothes are just not going to be as compact as size 4, no matter what you do.  I like your purse tip, too.
