Larry Hagman (J.R. From “Dallas”) is selling his Ojai, CA estate

Larry Hagman and his wife Maj have listed their 43-acre Ojai estate for $11 Million.

The 9-Bedroom 14-Bath Mediterranean-style estate is located at 9950 Sulphur Mountain Road, Ojai, CA 93023 – about 50 miles from Santa Barbara and about 80 miles from Los Angeles.

Apparently Hagman converted the entire estate to solar power so that his annual electrical bill was a mere $13.00 – down from $37,000.

Admittedly, he spent $750,000 on the project but he did receive a $300,000 credit from the electric company.

You can read it on The Real Estate Blog here.

If you want to shell out $11 million to buy the home, can I come and visit? :)

On Electricity

It may seem like insanity to spend almost half a million ($450,000) to convert your huge mansion into an electricity saving monster, but he was also spending $37,000 a year in electricity.

$450,000* / $37,000 = 12 years

(*$450,000 is after the $300,000 credit)

That means after 12 years, he saves a boatload of money, paying only $13/year rather than $37,000 a year.

Of course, we could make the argument that he doesn’t need such a damn big house to begin with, and he lives in a very sunny climate (California) that allows for solar energy to be an efficient method of running a home.

But I think if you are planning on living in such a home for 40 years, you would be saving quite a bit.

40 years – 12 years = 28 years

28 years x $37,000 saved = $1,036,000!!

It brings up interesting ideas about how on a global basis, we can look into solar panels for creating electricity.

My only caveat with the whole thing is the factories and utter waste that would be produced to create these solar panels.

Is it really green or not?

Hmmm, I'm about $10,999,999 short but the bank says I qualify for an ARM loan and my payments will only be $200 a month for the next three years. Then there's a bunch of small print but I don't have time to read that.

Seriousky, I could live in his indoor pool room alone.

    HAHAHA!

Maybe you and I should pool our cash together and buy a room in the house each.

No one really needs all of that space. Imagine all the cleaning? *shudder*

    Maybe he's downsizing too :)

Rather superb entry, definitely useful stuff. Never ever considered I’d find the facts I need right here. I have been looking everywhere in the internet for some time now and had been starting to get discouraged. Fortunately, I happened across your blog and received precisely what I was searching for.
