What it is

People are unnecessarily complicating the lives thinking that they cannot survive unless they are in constant competition with friends, family and colleagues. The reality is that most of our forefathers have existed with significantly less than what we have today and they have lived full and satisfactory lives and they often stated that they lack nothing but that they are happy and content. Therefore a minimalistic lifestyle is simply one which is without all of those things which complicates people’s lives. In other words people only focus on those things which they really need in order to survive and to be comfortable. This is the basic requirements for a minimalistic lifestyle but for others their may be a different definition whereby they may choose to live their lives. A further condition for a minimalistic lifestyle which is truly satisfactory is that it should not be something which is forced upon a person but it should be something which is chosen on purpose and with good reason. In a sense minimalism is simply a condition where in people focus their lives on those things which they really treasure and which is really essential for a satisfactory lifestyle. In order to accomplish this it is important to also identify those things which is unnecessarily complicating life and then remove those things out of the equation.

Slaves to their own selfish desires.

Like we have already said there are so many people that are consumed by the rat race of life. They cannot stop for one moment for fear that they will fall to far behind the competition and therefore their lives is a continual reaching for those things which are just beyond their financial means. They are forever trying to find a way in which to possess senseless things which can never bring true happiness and fulfillment. However this is not the way of real fulfillment because even Paul the apostle says, I have learned to be content in whatever situation I am. There is even the warning that, what will it benefit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul. However when we look around us there are so many people that are constantly chasing after things and in the process so many things which is really valuable and necessary are forgotten. However when practicing minimalism there is no longer that constant striving to chase after worthless possessions and therefore such a life is infinitely more peaceful and enjoyable because there is no stress and worry about things which ultimately has very little value when compared to health, happiness and companionship. There is also this saying that some people spend all their health in order to accumulate wealth, but once they have the wealth there is no longer any health left to enjoy what has been accumulated.

The pressures of modern living

Everything in our modern life seems to place large amounts of pressure on the average person. There is the continual pressure to compete with family, friends and colleagues and then there is also the incessant marketing campaigns of large corporations and businesses who are doing everything in their ability to keep people in debt. Millions of people believe the lies which is preached over our radios, on television and also in the printed media. The result is that people can no longer survive without their credit cards or other forms of finance. This leaves us in a position where we continually have to over exert ourselves just in order to cope with the pressures of everyday living. We were never designed to live life in this way and therefore it is not surprising that we developed physical problems, psychological problems and we are continually coming into conflict with one another because of our selfish desires and ambitions. On top of that it continually feels as if we are falling behind and that leads to foolish mistakes along the way from which many people never recover. When we throw out all those things which is not really necessary in order to survive we actually set ourselves free because there is no longer a need for all those foolish competitions and accumulating all those possessions. Now we only need to focus on the barest essentials, the things with true value and when we reach this important stage we finally start to realize what living really is about. Our complicated little lives

Most people have to succeed on so many different planes and this requires their success to be duplicated in all those areas. They have to be successful in their family circle as well as in their professional lives. Then they must also succeed in athletic abilities such as on the golf course or on the tennis court and in many other areas such as their political involvement. All of these things require very large amounts of energy, motivation and discipline and sometimes all of these pressures can simply get too much. Then there are many people who succeed to create an attractive image which is portrayed to the outside world while only the inner circle of that family is aware that everything is simply a façade, a house of cards and that everything could come tumbling down at any moment. All of these things can be avoided by making a decision to commit yourself to a minimalistic lifestyle. Now there is no longer any need to compete or to impress anyone, therefore there is no stress and no pressure on the body or mind.
